JEC group to bring composite solutions for mobility to the 2020 Detroit Auto Show

After Mondial. Tech, NAIAS 2019, and eMove 360°, JEC Group will hold the 4th Composites Pavilion at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit from June 9 to 11, 2020 in a spirit of innovation, business, and networking.

At NAIAS 2020, JEC Group will highlight the latest technologies and solutions allowing the automotive industry to innovate in product design, reduce the environmental impact of emissions and improve production rates thanks to composite materials. For the first time in 2020, the Composites Mobility Summit will simultaneously include the pavilion with a showcase of innovative parts, an extensive conference program, and a composites tour. Composite materials are a key part of the future of the Mobility industry and this Summit will both demonstrate the exciting variety of their applications, and aim to push forward their use in an even more global scope.

Within the Composite Solutions for Mobility pavilion, the displayed parts will highlight the different applications of composites for mobility such as lightweight, design freedom, aesthetics and flexibility, resistance, strength and stiffness, function integration, hybridization, fuel storage, connectivity integration and battery housing.

On June 10, a set of conferences, will host high-profile speakers who will share their vision of composites in the mobility industry. The conference topics will address: lightweight structures, increased use of thermoplastics and their benefits, carbon fiber use for structural parts in large scale production, multi-material solutions, balancing performance and cost-effectiveness, autonomous vehicles, e-mobility, hydrogen solutions, and sustainability (through a ‘greener’ strategy both in materials and processes). Mark Voss, Engineering Group Manager, Body Structures Advanced Composites, Pickup Boxes, and Structural Battery Enclosures at GENERAL MOTORS will give a special keynote to launch the day, about Thermoplastic Structural Automotive Components: a Platform of Future Cost Viability and Sustainability. Additional presentations from Continental Structural Plastics, Yanfeng Automotive Interiors (YFAI), Magna Exteriors, and more, will complete the line-up.

The composites tour will enable guests to discover one of JEC Group’s Institute Partners: IACMI’s Scale Up Research Facility (SURF) in Detroit, with commentary from IACMI experts. Located in the Corktown district, it represents IACMI’s Vehicles Technology Area. The SURF is managed by Michigan State University. LIFT (Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow) and IACMI co-invested in the manufacturing facility in 2015, and research and workforce development projects began in 2016.
