6 Mar 2018
This morning, Paris became the world capital of composites at this year’s JEC World. Along with the live demos, dozens of conferences, and hundreds of events, the first day of the trade show was marked by the announcement of the three winners of the largest international startup competition in the composite sector. The international program puts innovation, entrepreneurship, startups and composites together.

“With this program, we are getting to the essentials of JEC Group’s mission, which is to promote innovation, encourage networking and inform investors, specifiers and anyone with a set of specifications to meet about the potential of composites in all their applications. And we want to help develop the innovation potential of startups!” explains JEC Group President & CEO Frédérique MUTEL, who is also a member of the jury.

Three Winners

This morning, the ten finalists pitched their projects in front of a jury, and in the afternoon, the ceremony opened with a special keynote guest, Dirk Ahlborn, the founder and CEO of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, before the announcement of the three Startup Booster winners:

Introduces vertically aligned carbon nanotubes at interlaminar interfaces to allow tougher, lighter, and more durable composite structures.

Has a new electroplating procedure to metallize carbon fibers in a single step using environment-friendly electrolytes to enhance the properties of carbon fibers. These fibers can be used to create functional CFRP as well as new fiber-reinforced metals.

Has developed a novel patented material which provides over 100 times better noise attenuation in a smaller package compared to conventional materials. This solution could greatly facilitate the adoption of composites in many sectors.

For the first time, the public can vote on a favorite

Karl-Heinz FÜLLER (Daimler), Bridget SHAREI (N12 Technologies), Falko BÖTTGER-HILLER (Inca-Fiber GmbH), Anne-Manuèle HEBERT (JEC Group), Dirk AHLBORN (Hyperloop Transportation Technologies), Eimear O’CARROLL (Sound Bounce), Jelle BLOEMHOF (Airbus)
After two hours during which the young talents pitched their projects to an audience of manufacturers, institutional players, financiers and academics, the jury used the following criteria to make its choice:
  • Presentation quality & clarity

A day dedicated to the Startup Booster program at JEC World

The members of the jury have chosen their favorites: “The industry is always on the lookout for innovations. We take our hats off to the ten startups, who have outdone themselves today as well as the jury members for their involvement in the program at JEC World 2018!” says Anne-Manuèle HÉBERT, Show Director for JEC Group and European Events (including JEC World).

In addition to significant public exposure vis-à-vis the international composite professionals, the jury and public favorites will benefit from an acceleration program that includes a stand at JEC World 2019.

“The three winners from last year have taken stock of their situation, and they indicate that the program enabled them to benefit from more professional interactions and to move into higher gear. We’d like to congratulate N12 Technologies, Inca-Fiber GmbH and Sound Bounce, and we hope they will have the same success!” continues Ms. Hébert.
