Break through with Bio-BMC: natural and renewable materials used to make composite materials
Composite materials are no longer limited to resins derived from Petro Chemicals, minerals and glass fibres. Researchers at Menzolit’s research laboratory at Vineuil, France, had presented at this year’s JEC conference a new generation of BMC material nearly entirely made of renewable and natural growing materials.
Limited raw material resources
In today’s world with ever increasing demand of limited raw materials like petrol oil or energy, dwindling raw material availability and therefore sky rocketing raw material cost; natural growing and therefore renewable materials become interesting to material designers. This was the starting point for Menzolit’s product designers. A sustainable material business is based on access and availability of raw materials. Therefore, it is important to look on other resources than today’s used raw materials.
Interesting properties
Besides the renewable resources the product has features not possible with currently used materials. It can be designed for outdoor resistance or for decomposition according to customer’s demands. Bio-BMC is a very new experimental product at the beginning of its lifecycle and information on properties is limited. Possible applications are parts in automotive market but in consumer markets as well.
About Menzolit
Menzolit is the registered trade name of Menzolit-Fibron’s SMC, BMC and CIC Compounds. Menzolit-Fibron is the largest developer and manufacturer of SMC/BMC compounds with over 55 years of experience. Customers of a broad range of industries, including automotive, trucking, electrical and construction are being served in Europa, America and Asia through affiliates and partners, which allow us to serve customers worldwide. Bio-BMC has been developed at Menzolit S.A. at Vineuil, France. This Bio-BMC is the worldwide first time use of BMC based on natural products.
