Break through with new highly fire resistant material

Low smoke, no toxic fumes, highly fire resistant material, challenges phenolics materials in railway applications.
Toughest Fire standards
The strongest fire safety standard in Europe is the British standard BS 6853 for railways. BS 6853 places particular emphasis on smoke evolution and toxicity. This comes from the disastrous experience made at King’s Cross fire at London Underground in 1987. Up to now only phenolic composites met the requirements of BS 6853 for railways with traffic through tunnels (category 1b).
Menzolit SMC 2400 to meet toughest standards
In answering this challenge Menzolit-Fibron presents now a new menzolit®-SMC 2400 generation, which achieves category 1b of BS 6853. This new SMC
development combines excellent fire resistance, very low smoke generation and non-toxity with good mechanical strength and electrical properties. As polyester composites have a number of inherent advantages over phenolics and thermoplastics in terms of processability, costs and environmental performance menzolit®-SMC 2400 is a good alternative for new railway projects. Possible applications are for example seats, coverings and side wall panels.
