New half-closed honeycomb from thermoplastics

© EconCore
EconCore presents at the JEC in Paris - to be held from April 1 to 3, 2008 - a new revolutionary half-closed thermoplastic honeycomb core. This half-closed honeycomb core is based on EconCore´s patented ThermHex technology and was especially developed for the composite industry to offer a thermoplastic honeycomb core of outstanding cost efficiency.
The JEC exhibition will be the world premiere for EconCore’s new half-closed thermoplastic honeycomb core which will be presented in a large variety of possible material combinations. Further, EconCore has announced that a new production line is currently under construction at EconCore to provide economic sandwich cores and panels to small and medium volume customers.
Compared to conventional honeycombs the new core provides a very good core-skin bonding due to a larger bonding area for the skins. The half-open cells allow to create node bonds between the cell walls for maximal shear performance. The core can be made from Polypropylene, Polyethyleneterephthalate, Polycarbonate, Polyamide and other polymers. Flame retardant versions are possible as well.
Jochen Pflug, CEO of EconCore highlights the cost advantage: “Our continuous production process allows to produce honeycomb cores at lower cost than any competitor.” EconCore targets to make honeycomb cores the best choice for many applications, substituting foam cores and homogeneous constructions.
The EconCore technologies, TorHex (paper honeycomb), ThermHex (thermoplastic honeycomb) and the new half-closed honeycomb core enable an in-line production of lightweight, cost efficient honeycomb sandwich panels. For specific material combinations and large volume applications EconCore offers licenses and engineering to integrate those technologies to in-line panel production lines. This is especially interesting in terms of cost savings for large production volumes.
