Structural adhesive in the New York subway

© Lord
During 2003, Alstom’s Brazilian subsidiary won a competition to supply part of the structure used in the subway trains bought by the New York subway. Made of stainless steel, the pieces (called “boxes”) have two masks – front and rear – made of fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) produced by Fênix, company located at São José dos Campos, state of São Paulo. “400 boxes from Alstom were hired. So, we will produce 800 FRP masks”, explains Paulo Henrique Gonzales, Fênix industrial manager.
Half of all the supplying took place in 2007, because both Alstom and its suppliers had to go through the severe qualification of the New York subway, which was the case for the adhesive and coatings manufacturer Lord. “We have used structural adhesive Lord 406/19 for bonding the FRP masks in the stainless steel structure”, describes Gonzales. For Fênix industrial manager, Lord’s 406/19 performance is exceptional. “The adhesive provides great results for flat parts which are bonded, and which require bonding films with up to 1 mm thickness”, he explains. Nowadays, Fênix is served by Redelease, Lord’s authorized supplier for the industrial segment.
Giuliana Franchi, from the sales and technical services department of Lord, explains that Lord 406/19 is a two-component adhesive based on methacrylate, which can be used for adherence in different surfaces, as an example of metal, FRP and engineering plastics. “This product get the attention because of the combination of versatility and the rapid cure for the handling, around 15 minutes”, she states. Sold in cartridges – which facilitate the application – the 406/19 Lord adhesive is widely used by the automotive and nautical industries, “as well as for industrial bolters, satellite dishes and aluminum frames’ manufacturers”, states Giuliana.
About Lord
Specializing in the manufacture of adhesives, primers, varnishes and coatings based on water, epoxy, acrylic and polyurethane, Lord Industrial Ltd. – a subsidiary of the North American Lord Corporation – began its activities in Brazil in 1972 in the city of São Paulo. The following year, it transferred its productive unit to the industrial hub of Jundiaí (São Paulo), where it has remained until today. Throughout this period, Lord has become one of the main icons in the Brazilian adhesive market, principally with regard to the fabrication of products with low levels of heavy metals, primers for the treatment of metal surfaces and water-based adhesives. Lord is certified based on technical specifications ISO/TS 16.949:2002 and ISO.9001/2000. Currently it is implementing environmental policies based on norm ISO 14.001 and it invests in social actions for the community.
