Water-based mould release, MoldWiz®WB-2700, for epoxy spars

Axel Plastics Research Laboratories announced the success of a new waterbased
release, MoldWiz® WB-2700, in the production of epoxy spars for the marine industry. The
new release product is a silicone free emulsion of fatty acids, polyolefins, and surfactants in a water vehicle. The product contains no hazardous materials making it friendly to both the user and the environment. MoldWiz® WB-2700 is 10% active.
A case history in marine spar production
A manufacturer produces epoxy spars for the marine market, wet wrapping, and then braiding carbon and Kevlar® tapes on 40’(12.1m) aluminum mandrels. Prior to evaluating MoldWiz® WB-2700, two different types of mould release, one fluoropolymer-based, the other, a silicone/alcohol mixture were employed to achieve good release. Neither mould release product by itself was judged adequate.
MoldWiz®2700 was introduced to the process by simply spraying the 100% waterbased
release onto a clean mandrel using a hand pumped spray bottle, and then
lightly wiping the surface with a cotton cloth to ensure thorough coverage. The
mandrel was initially prepared with 3 coats of release before being introduced to
production.
The spars that employed MoldWiz® WB-2700 released easily with the single
release product. Plant workers were pleased with the elimination of the odor from
the alcohol/silicone based release and the manufacturer was pleased to eliminate
silicone (a possible contaminant) from the process area.
MoldWiz WB-2700 is just one of the hundreds of products produced by Axel, a 67 year
old, ISO 9001 registered, manufacturer of proprietary mould releases and process aid
additives. All of Axel's products are formulated from raw materials that comply with the
chemical substance inventory lists of TSCA, DSL, MITI, EINECS, Australia and Korea.
Customers are served both through direct sales and by a network of 32 stockings
distributors located in 25 countries around the globe. Axel encourages requests for
evaluation samples by visiting the company’s web site at: www.axelplastics.com
