An innovative composite blower housing

© Premix
An innovative composite blower housing for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) industry earned Premix, Inc., the 2008 Thermoset Durability Award from the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE).
The award, which recognizes advancements in thermoset materials, design, processing, and applications, was presented at the SPE Thermoset Moulding Conference in Madison, Wisc.
Premix, Inc. was singled out in the new market development category for the composite blower housing developed for Trane Residential Systems – Package Units & Air Handler Systems. Compression-moulded from Premix Premi-Glas® SMC, the composite blower housing replaced a stamped, fabricated, sheet metal assembly, resulting in lower cost, consolidated parts, and improved air flow efficiency.
“Premix is pleased to deliver exceptional value to customers like Trane, a leader in innovation in the HVAC industry,” says Steve Searl, market development manager at Premix, Inc. “The critical performance properties and competitive advantages of our thermoset products continue to create exciting new opportunities for conversion of metal to Premi-Glas compression-moulded SMC.”
Premi-Glas® SMC is UL-recognized (Underwriters Laboratories) for a variety of applications; offers heat and dimensional stability at a wide range of temperatures; is creep resistant; assures dimensional accuracy; and has superior mechanical properties for applications requiring high strength and durability.
Because of its many advantages, Premi-Glas SMC is ideal for replacing traditional materials. Lower total cost; part consolidation and weight reduction; sound dampening; lower vibration and harshness; corrosion resistance; improved aesthetics; lower tooling cost and longer tool life; and reduced assembly and fabricating time make it an attractive alternative for design engineers and manufacturers.
