Composites specialist bucking the trend
Carbon fibre composites specialist, Polar Composites has responded to the tough economic conditions by investing in premises, staff and services, and has taken record orders as a result.
The Norfolk-based company which designs and manufactures tooling and components has made significant investments in new machinery and building improvements to increase efficiency and enhance its service to customers. A new direct sales role has also been created to generate more business.
In June the company took the highest value of orders in one week since it first started business. Recent contracts in the marine, sports and leisure industries include the supply of panels to a yacht builder, mobile phones, canoe paddles and an innovative cricket helmet which has been sported by a number of players in the recent Twenty20 World Cup. The company also continues to fulfil orders in the automotive, motorsport and transport industries and plans to pursue new applications for its carbon fibre products.
Mike Harris, Managing Director of Polar Composites is confident the investment will pay off:
“We are coming to the end of our third year in business and I can’t deny it’s been a tough period, with many of the industries we work in affected by the economic downturn. However, we are buoyed up by the growing interest in our services and have chosen to pursue a positive strategy of investment for the future which I believe will reap rewards. We have taken record orders, are receiving new enquiries almost daily and are proactively seeking new business,” he said.
Mike has installed a CNC ply cutting machine and a hydraulic press mould that both greatly speed up the production process, reducing costs and increasing output. The builders were called in to adapt the business premises to cater for the new processes, improve storage and create a better working environment for staff.
Mike and his team of 10 personnel has been expanded to include a direct sales role, responsible for business development. Polar Composites has also boosted its presence by investing in a new website which is attracting hits from all over the world.
