Large truck mid-roof to be manufactured in Brazil

© Tecnofibras
Tecnofibras will soon launch the production of a mid-roof for the 9800 truck model manufactured by International do Brazil. The part will be moulded using the Resin Transfer Moulding High Technology (RTM/HT) process, considered to be one of the most innovative and modern processes for the production of moulded composite parts.
Located in Joinville, SC, Brazil, Tecnofibras (Busscar Group) is one of Latin America’s largest moulders of reinforced plastic parts for the automotive, agricultural machinery and civil construction industries.
An unusually large part
The roof is 2,400 mm x 2,300 mm x 1,000 mm, or 8,146 m². It is the first time such a large part will be produced in Brazil. According to Alberto de Maio, Tecnofibras’ commercial manager, the product combines high quality and high technology. The technical and engineering team on the project has been developing and producing parts for the truck market for thirty years now.
The production process had to be adapted to the moulding system with a modern station for the mould core and cavity, as well as a finishing area including the paint shops, handling logistics, a warehouse area, and transport racks. The roof will be part of a series of components that will equip trucks sold to foreign markets such as South Africa and Russia in 2009.
Thirty years of know-how
Tecnofibras has been developing processing technology for glass-fibre-reinforced plastics since its inception in 1978. The company soon became a leader, pioneering the use of the RTM process in Latin America and producing monolithic parts and high-surface finish parts.
The RTM process was introduced in 1987 and has been constantly perfected, using last-generation techniques such as electroformed moulds, high-performance resins and fixed moulding stations. Vacuum forming was first used in 1996, with last-generation equipment and concepts plus an alternative solution for parts in ABS, polypropylene, polystyrene, engineering plastics and other materials.
The SMC process was initiated in 2000 with state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques for moulding glass-fibre-reinforced plastics for high-volume production.
Tecnofibras’ industrial processing unit includes 20,000 m² of roofed area and has the capacity to process monthly 100 metric tons of glass-fibre-reinforced plastics (thermosets) and 25 metric tons of vacuum-formed materials (thermoformed).
Other processes are under evaluation and will be available depending on market needs.
