ABMACO and IPT start the activities for the recycling program of composites
The Brazilian Composite Materials Association (ABMACO) and the Institute for Technological Research (IPT) have entered into an agreement to start the activities of ABMACO’s National Recycling Program. The project aims to develop tools to ensure the reuse of composites waste in the production process.
ABMACO’s National Recycling Program is a collective action, a consortium type. The funds required for the implementation of the program will initially be funded by 18 investment companies: Ashland, Comil, Composites Brasil, Cray Valley, Edra Equipamentos, Elekeiroz, Fiacbras, Marcopolo, Morquímica, MVC, Novapol, Owens Corning, Piatex, Poliresinas, Redelease, Reichhold, Royal Polímeros and Tecnofibras. Large part of these investments will be applied to research and the acquisition of a recycling pilot laboratory. The expected period for the program implementation is 20 months.
With the support from ABMACO’s technical team, IPT will classify the particles that comprise the composites waste, then to indicate the best way to reuse them. After that, the solutions developed can be commercially exploited by companies in the program.
The technical work will be divided into two stages. The first one, focused on the reuse of waste in the production process, includes crushing and grinding studies, followed by researches on the inactivity of peroxides (responsible for composites polymerization). The second stage is dedicated to the exploratory analysis of new ways to use waste, by the selection of material and evaluation of their properties.
According to ABMACO’s estimates, the Brazilian composites sector generates approximately 18,000 tons of waste every year, representing an expenditure of US$ 66 million with the disposal at Class 2 landfills. In 2009, 182,000 tons of the material was produced, totaling US$ 1.24 billion revenue.
About ABMACO
Established in 1981, the Brazilian Composite Materials Association (ABMACO) represents the entire production chain of composites or fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP), a material that has over 40,000 applications cataloged worldwide, from water storage tanks to pipes and aircraft and rocket parts. Presided by Gilmar Lima, General Director of MVC Plásticos, ABMACO has 252 members and holds, together with Institute for Technological Research (IPT), the Composites Technologic Center (CETECOM), the largest of its segment in Latin America.
