The 3M Specialty Fibers and Composites business unit has been a manufacturer of high performance ceramic fibers for over 25 years. S F & C products, sold under the Nextel brand name, are available in a variety of fiber compositions and product forms. Applications for Nextel products range from spacecraft micrometeorite shields and thermal protection blankets to high temperature seals for the metal processing and petrochemical processing industries. Nextel metal matrix composite applications include lightweight electrical conductor and high performance automotive pushrods. Ceramic matrix composites include high temperature resistant spaceshuttle tiles. Polymer matrix composites include aircraft firewalls and structural members requiring high modulus non-conductive fibers.
