PETRONAS and AACM hosts the 8th Asian-Australasian Conference on Composite Materials in Kuala Lumpur

Reflecting the growing importance of advanced material n the oil and gas industry, PETRONAS, through the Technology and Engineering (T&E) Division and in cooperation with the Asian-Australasian Association for Composite Materials (AACM), recently organised the 8th Asian-Australisian Conference on Composite Materials (ACCM-8) which was officiated by YBhg Ir Datuk Yeow Kian Chai, Advisor to the Institute of Materials Malaysia (IMM).

In his opening remarks, Datuk Yeow welcomed the over 400 delegates from 27 countries to Malaysia and the conference.  He expressed the importance for the materials community working together to develop solutions for the industry.  “ACCM-8 provides an ideal platform for such interactions whereby new R&D cooperation between various parties can be fostered,” he added.

The organising committee chairman, Dr K H Leong, who also heads the Advanced Materials activities at PETRONAS Research, said that the response for ACCM-8 was beyond expectation and has drawn in 276 papers from over 600 authors.  The papers were presented in 50 technical sessions.  Specially invited plenary lectures and poster papers were also presented at the conference, alongside a technical exhibition and a pre-conference composite design and application masterclass.

JEC Magazine was the official media partner of the conference, and M. Daniel Ageda, Secretary-General of JEC Composites delivered the first lecture of the conference with his presentation entitled “Overview and Dynamism of the Worldwide Composites Market”.

It is noteworthy that, apart from PETRONAS, the organising committee comprised members from  over 10 local universities and related organisations, thus making ACCM-8 a truly Malaysian effort.

The 3-day conference, held between 6 and 8 November, at the KL Convention Centre,   reached its highlight at the banquet, which was hosted by the T&E Division.  In his dinner speech, Ir Dr Colin Wong Hee Huing, Vice-President  of Technology & Engineering (T&E) stressed that the continued importance of engineering polymers and composite materials in today’s world cannot be overstated.  However, he also added that the use of composites for primary structures continues to elude the oil and gas industry and as such PETRONAS has made the R&D of advanced materials one of the major research areas.
