Sandvik Coromant relocate global Deep Hole Machining Application Center

The company has relocated its Global Application Center for Deep Hole Machining (DHM) from Cirencester to its headquarters at Halesowen in the West Midlands. The move not only centralises the company’s deep hole machining business, but benefits customers with wider machining demands who can now enjoy solutions delivered from a single location.

The relocated Application Center will be used to develop new and innovative deep hole machining processes for customers in sectors such as power generation, aerospace and energy. The facility will also act as an important point of reference for machine tool manufacturers, research establishments and universities that want to undertake cutting trials on specific materials or components.

Capability
The Deep Hole Machining Application Center at Halesowen includes a special deep hole drilling machine capable of internal profiling and chamber boring. It offers a capacity of 600 by 2,500 mm (part diameter by length) and is able to produce holes from 10 to 150 mm diameter – counterbored to a maximum of 300 mm diameter. As an aid to helping the Application Center develop robust, reliable processes, the machine is also fitted with a number of sensors. These log parameters, such as spindle torque load, coolant volume, coolant pressure, thrust and vibration. With this information, decisions about process parameters and tooling can be made based on scientific information.

One of the most notable DHM trend is the call for its adoption on conventional machining center platforms. At present, deep hole machining has to be undertaken on a separate machine, with a separate set-up, which results in the need for additional time and subsequently, cost. Among those currently working with Sandvik Coromant to advance this area is WFL Millturn Technologies and the Machine Tools Division of Precision Technologies Group (PTG).

Ongoing innovation
Deep hole machining innovation is a priority for Sandvik Coromant. In the past six months alone the company has brought to market a number of enhancements to its DHM portfolio, including geometry for counterboring inserts, insert grade for skiving operations, and the availability of previously special-only drill ranges as standard.
