Highly efficient ultrasonic-machining of composites with double feed rates and reduced process forces: Sauer GmbH with its two technology fields Ultrasonic and Lasertec represents the advanced technologies of DMG Mori Seiki. Ultrasonic stands for the ultrasound-assisted machining of advanced materials (e.g. ceramics, glass) as well as the highly efficient machining of fibre reinforced materials (e.g. CFRP, GFRP). A patented inductive actuator system, based on a standardized HSK tool holder, generates an axial amplitude of several microns at a frequency of up to 50 kHz. This amplitude, which reduces the process forces by up to 40%, is overlaid onto a standard spindle speed of up to 40,000 rpm. This, in turn, leads to sharp edges, eliminating fibre tearing or delamination and increases feed rates on up to 15-20 m/min, with tool life of > 600 m for tungsten carbide tools (dry cutting).
