This 200 page technical publication is the result of several years of research by the CELC’s European Scientific Committee – CSE, written to raise awareness and promote the use of flax and hemp fibres as sustainable natural fibres in composite materials. In particular, automotive, building & construction, and electrical & electronics are seen as global markets with interesting growth potential for natural fibres.

The aim of this reference book is to inform industry players across the value chain how flax and hemp can be successfully used within the framework of an effective eco-design initiative and calls attention to the importance of an open-innovation approach to meet the needs of the composites industry and manufacturing companies in the medium to long term. 

 

It contains detailed studies of the mechanical and physical properties of the flax and hemp fibres used in polymer reinforcement, the benefits that can be gained in some applications over other reinforcements (e.g. sound dampening, weight reduction) and assesses their major environmental advantages, including biodegradability. Converting methods and manufacturing processes are also covered, providing not just technical information for R & D and design engineers, but valuable information about using natural fibres in production and how they can be incorporated within the existing composites supply chain.

  • The ‘state of the art’ of natural flax and hemp fibres  (complex structure identification)
  • Analysis of the mechanical performance of natural fibre reinforced composite materials (e.g. variation of specific properties as a function of the fibre processing method used, controlling biodegradability)
