Massimo Calda
Pras Tecnica Edilizia

After his initial training with the Studio Nervi (the famous Italian architect/structural designer) in Rome, Massimo went on to be a founding partner of Pras Tecnica Edilizia. Massimo is particularly interested in all new and effi cient structural materials and is currently involved in programs for using and testing several structural composite materials. Massimo is expert in the design of complex building structures, including foundations, seismic buildings, high-rise buildings, domes and long-span roofs, and special structural materials, and is otherwise particularly dedicated to project management.

Philippe Christou
Huntsman Advanced Materials

Philippe Christou joined Huntsman Advanced Materials in January 2005 as European Technology Manager in the Design and Composites Engineering business unit, with the responsibility of Product Creation and Technical Support, for composites, adhesives and tooling applications. Before that he built experience in the composite industry as R&D Chemistry Manager for 10 years with Hexcel Composites (development of structural matrix resins for prepreg and direct process), and then with a similar position for 5 years with Hexcel Reinforcement (chemistry of interfaces for carbon, glass and aramid fi bres, development of binders for reinforcement dedicated to direct process). In July 2007, he has been appointed as Technology Director for Europe,
Middle-East, Africa and India (EMEAI) within Huntsman Advanced Materials.

Ebrahim Ghavam-Shahidi
Advanced Composites Group Ltd. (ACG)

(Ebby Shahidi) Ebby joined Advanced CompositesGroup Ltd. (ACG), part of the Umeco Composites- Structural Materials (UCSM) of Umeco plc, as Senior Composite Design Engineer in 1986. Currently Ebby is the Technical Director of ACG/ UCSM, He has witnessed signifi cant growth in the Group’s product portfolio and in its standing as custom epoxy, BMI and phenolic prepreg manufacturer and leading technology provider to major companies across all market sectors. Ebby, who holds BSc and MSc degrees in Mechanical Engineering, has a passion for composites in general, particularly so when it comes to the potential that current technological advancements promise for future applications. He has a particular passion for realising the unseen potential that the future holds for those with the enthusiasm to push the boundaries to develop existing and new technologies. Ebby’s career includes a period as Structural Composite Design Engineer in aerospace, defence and Motorsports sectors that the Group now actively serves as an advanced composites materials manufacturer.

Freelance journalist

Master’s in Chemistry (University of Dijon); DESS post-graduate diploma in ceramics and plastics materials (University of Dijon); DEA post-graduate diploma in metallurgy (Institut National Polytechnique of Grenoble). Journalist since 1980, was Assistant Editor in Chief of the trade journal Industries et Techniques. Freelance journalist for the last 15 years for several trade magazines. Sectors covered: materials, energy, environment. He regularly contributes to JEC Composites Magazine.

Patricia Krawczak
Ecole des Mines de Douai

Professor Patricia Krawczak has been the Manager of the Polymers & Composites Technology Department of the Ecole des Mines de Douai (France) since 2000. She graduated in Plastics & Composites Engineering in 1989, obtained a PhD in 1993 and qualifi ed as Research Director in 1999, gaining extensive scientifi c and technical experience in the field of composite technologies and plastics processing. Her academic background has been completed by a strong industrial experience gained through many work periods in SME’s or large international companies, giving her a general knowledge of the needs of the different member bodies of the plastics & composites community.

Abramo Levato
ATR Group

Abramo Levato obtained a Mechanical Engineering Degree in Materials (Chemical-Physi cal features) at Catania University with a thesis on epoxy modified systems for dryer rolls in paper manufacturing process. With ATR Group (fi rstly as R&D Manager till 2007 and Operations Manager till today) had the luck to work in main several composite markets from automotive, competition, nautical, motorcycling, cycling, furnishing, sport and leisure to aeronautic and aerospace, directly meeting technical customer departments and having a direct link with main worldwide raw materials suppliers in order to develop customized products thanks to ATR experience (Ferrari, Maserati, Porsche, Bugatti, Agusta Westland, Ducati, Aprilia, MV Agusta, Yamaha, Audi, Peugeot, etc. some main customer). Assocompositi (Italian Composites Association) Directive Council member on behalf of ATR Group till 2007, Vice Chairman of Sampe Italy for the Italian Chapter, Jury Member JEC Awards since 2006, Expotecnica scientific Committee member, technical consultant for “Compositi” magazine and “Composite Solutions” magazine as well, Assomotoracing Honoured Committee Member are some of international experiences lived till now.

Thierry Merlot
Hexcel Corporation

Thierry Merlot is Hexcel’s Vice President & General Manager Europe / Middle East, Africa / Asia Pacific. Thierry graduated from Arts & Métiers school with a Mechanical Engineering degree. He started his career in R&D with Dassault Aviation in 1983, and moved to a Quality Manager position for Composites in Dassault. In 1988 he joined Brochier SA, a composite weaver and prepregger, affi liate of Ciba Geigy, serving Aerospace customers. He progressively took on increasing responsibilities in the Sales and Marketing organisation of Brochier / Ciba / Hexcel and currently acts as General Manager for the region Europe / Middle East, Africa / Asia Pacifi c. Thierry Merlot is a member of the JEC Board.

Frédérique Mutel
JEC Composites

Frédérique Mutel is JEC President & CEO of JEC.
Frédérique is fully committed to the expansion of composites and the networking of Science, Technology and Business communities. With a Masters in Litterature and Languages, she acquired experience first in international relations (UNDP and USAID), then in managing positions in aeronautics (Dassault Group Sogitec, electronics with Thales and IT (Accenture and Blenheim). She joined JEC in 1997 where she conducted a business development based on knowledge and networking services oriented to the composites sector and the final market. She was instrumental in the establishment of JEC as Number One in the world as provider of high value information and exchange services. She received the Legion of Honor for her contribution to international Trade.

Maurice Reyne
Free-lance consultant

Maurice Reyne is a free-lance consultant in synthetic materials. His background includesan engineering degree from the ENSAIS, a French Grande Ecole of Engineering in Strasbourg. He is a former Director of Technical and Economic Studies at CEGOS; advisor to the French Ministry of Industry and lecturer for several Grandes Ecoles. He has authored a number of books on materials and converting processes, including “Les Plastiques” and “Composites” for the paperback "Que sais-je ?" popularisation collection from Presses Universitaires de France (PUF), and more technical works such as : “Composite Solutions” (JEC Editions) “Plastic Forming Processes” (ISTE and Wiley) “Les Energies” (Hermes)

He graduated from Université de Technologie de Compiègne in Mechanical Engineering and obtained a PhD in 2001. His current research interests include: characterization, mechanics and processing of composite materials.

John D. Tickle
Strongwell Corporation

John D. Tickle until february 2011, was President of Strongwell Corporation headquartered in Bristol, Virginia – a position he has held since 1972. John and his family are the owners of Strongwell. Strongwell specializes in pultrusion and operates 65 pultrusion machines in over 600,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space in three plants. After graduating from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1965 with a degree in Industrial Engineering, John joined Owens Corning Ohio Technical Center. He subsequently held operations management positions with two other companies before returning to his hometown of Bristol to assume the presidency of Strongwell (then Morrison Molded Fiber Glass) in 1972. John is a past President of the American Composites Manufacturers Association.
