Additive Manufacturing combined with Windform materials are crossing the new frontiers of high performance applications. CRP Technology’s know-how comes from over 20 years of experience in additive technology applied to cutting edge sectors as motorsport and automotive, and nowadays it is focusing on non-conventional fields such as medical devices, achieving significant results on international scale.

CRP Technology and MHOX, in collaboration with medical professionals, developed an integrated framework of mass customization for generative orthoses. The system is based on three phases: bodyscan of the patient; generation of a 3D model of orthosis; 3D printing of the orthosis. It aims at replacing the traditional sizes system with a complete customization of the product.

MHOX is a generative design studio that focuses on wearable products and body extensions exploring the opportunities led by new technologies to mutate the aesthetic and functional potential of the human body. For this project it handles the first two stages developing and using proprietary software, designed for the automated management of systems for product mass customization. CRP Technology builds the orthosis with their Windform materials employing Selective Laser Sintering technology.

Techniques of generative design and simulation of biological phenomena, have made it possible to reproduce the shape of the orthosis, customized to fit the patient’s body and optimized for subsequent 3D printing.

This leads to significant reductions in the cost and time required to manufacture the orthosis, and the final result mirrors the affected limb perfectly, without the need for invasive medical examinations.

CRP Technology uses Windform GT material for this type of application, as its elasticity, impermeability and durability make it an ideal choice for use in this field. Windform GT is a polyamide-based material with glass fiber, whose special features make it particularly suitable for applications where the material has to be able to flex for extended periods without the risk of damage.

Windform orthoses are waterproof so patients can have showers without removing the medical device, they are breathable thanks to the technology of 3D printing that can allow any sort of shape and has no limit in the design.
The hand orthosis is intended to be a device to aid rehabilitation after surgical operation. It constrains any movement of the hand. A surface porosity, variable in size and distribution, allows the hand to stay ventilated and washable. The combination of the biologically inspired design and material qualities of the 3D printed object produce an aesthetic value new to this devices.

The leg orthosis is a device for patients with peroneal muscles deficits and consequent troubles in their gait cycle. The 3D scan allows the object to embrace both the leg and the foot, directly integrating a plantar. A specific joint, centered on the ankle, whose geometric characteristics vary parametrically from patient to patient, employs the flexibility of the material to provide active support and control in the gait cycle.

From 14 to 16 March CRP Technology and MHOX will join JEC WORLD 2017, the largest composites show in the world that covers the whole composites value chain from raw material to processors and final products.

CRP Technology and MHOX will be displaying generative orthoses (hand and leg) at Better Living Planet (medical section) in Hall 5A, P82.
