Aramid fiber and carbon/carbon composite materials used in Chinese JL-2

According to an article released from the military analysis institute, China third solid strategic nuclear missile basic type JL-2 has used aramid fiber composite as the shell material and carbon / carbon composite as the disposable extending nozzle material. Those are the method to reduce the missile weight in order to improve the ranges.

In order to extend the missile launching range, the high energy solid propellant NEPE has been applied in the JL-2 strategic nuclear missile. China is the third country has mastered the NEPE propellant technology after the USA and France, ahead of Russia.

The third solid strategic nuclear missile basic type JL-2 is designed by China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT). Bao Weiming is the chief designer, and Li Minghua was appointed the chief commander. Solid rocket engine was designed, manufactured and provided by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (Space China) Academy of Aerospace Solid Propulsion Technology (AASPT). Hou Xiao is the chief designer.

As early as in June 2003, JL-2 has successfully achieved its maiden flight. In January 2004, Y2 flight test also made a success. The two flight tests have tested engine performance. In June 16th, 2005, JL-2 has first launched successfully in the experimental submarine that tested the cartridge matching performance. In 2006, JL-2 first underwater launching test failed. In May 29th, 2008, JL-2 underwater launching test was successful.

JL-2 is three stage solid fuel submarine launched intercontinental missile, 2 meters in diameter, about 14 meters long, weighing about 40 tons. The 2 prototypes projectile range is between 7500 to 8000 km. The improved first new model missile test range is 9500 to 10500 kilometers.
