Supplier of structural adhesives for the main bus manufacturers in Brazil, LORD, subsidiary of the U.S. company LORD Corporation, aims to extend this expertise to the railway industry in 2012.
According to Marino Gaioffato, manager of industrial markets in South America, the strategy is primarily based on the fact that the company manufactures adhesives that meet the European safety standards for mass transportation, which is a common requirement of manufacturers of trains and subways.
“The series called LORD 400 meets the requirements of the German standard DIN 5510-2 and the English standard BS 476 regarding the behavior while burning, thus taking into account the reduction of both the spread of flames and the emission of toxic gases,” he explains.
Acrylic-based, these adhesives are very versatile, since they can be used in different types of substrates, including metals with no surface preparation. For trains and subways, the applications include front masks, ceilings, floors, doors and internal components. “LORD 400 adhesives also stand out for having a 100% reactive formulation, that is, they do not emit volatile organic compounds (VOC) into the atmosphere,” says Marcelo Bianchini, account manager of the industrial market of LORD.
By the end of the year, Gaiofatto estimates that the railway industry sales may account for approximately 10% of the turnover involving LORD 400 adhesives. “This is a sector that might receive many investments due to the World Cup and the Olympic Games,” he believes.
