"Carbon-carbon composites equipment and application" won national award

After 30 years of efforts, the "carbon / carbon composite material technology equipment and application" project has won the second prize of 2012 China National Science and Technology Progress Award.

The project is under the direction of Academician Sun Jinliang who is the director of Shanghai University composite materials research center.

Carbon / carbon composite material is a kind of special composite material made of carbon fiber reinforced carbon matrix. It has the characteristics of low density, high strength, high modulus, ablation resistance, thermal shock resistance and others.

Carbon / carbon composite material also has maintained excellent strength at high temperature, which is one of the most ideal high temperature structural materials under non-oxidizing atmosphere known so far. It is also the key material for solid rocket motor nozzle throat lining.

The preparing for skeleton material and the carbon matrix composite technology are the key technologies of carbon / carbon composites.

In 2001, the research center advanced carbon / carbon composites and fiber reinforced skeleton materials research and production line has been completed and put into operation. Hence, the center become one of the important bases with the R & D and production capacity of fiber reinforced structural material and carbon / carbon composite materials.

Shanghai University carbon / carbon composite material technology equipment and application scientific research team has undertaken more than 30 major national science and technology research projects in China.

Last year, the center has won the certificates for its related supporting work in China's manned space engineering design and construction, its contribution to successful completion of the "Tiangong-1" and "Shenzhou eight" rendezvous and docking mission, and its contribution in supporting the research and development of the "Tiangong-1", "Shenzhou nine", and "Long March two F" during China's first manned rendezvous and docking mission.

At present, the team is still developing some new materials, including carbon / carbon metal composite materials, carbon / carbon - ceramic composite materials with the carbon / carbon material as matrix to serve the military application as well as civilian industries.
