21 May 2013

Mike Gascoyne, CEO of Caterham Technology & Innovation (CTI), Caterham Composites and MGI, and Sailing Director Brian Thompson have launched 'Caterham Challenge', an innovative Class 40 offshore racing campaign that will revolutionise offshore racing, using Formula One technology and logistics to encourage a greener, more sustainable future for offshore racing.

Under Mike and Brian's leadership, the two arms of Caterham Group will act as consultancies to MGI which will lead the project, providing engineering and technology support for the campaign, which will start with the Transat Jacques Vabre race, from France to Brazil in November 2013.

Mike successfully completed his first Class 40 solo transatlantic expedition in 2012 and the launch of the two-year Caterham Challenge campaign will see him build on that experience with Brian Thompson, one of the world's leading offshore racing experts and holder of multiple sailing world records.

The combined experience, knowledge and expertise of the three groups involved, CTI, Caterham Composites and MGI, gives Caterham Challenge a unique platform to bring innovation and new thinking to the sport of offshore racing.

CTI brings valuable insights based on its specialist research and development capabilities, giving a different perspective from its in-depth knowledge of the automotive and motorsport industries.

With a focus on achieving maximum performance from the lightest and most efficient technical solutions, the company constantly strives to break new ground in innovative solutions, for the Caterham Group and external companies. That includes the production of carbon composite components at the CTI facility in Hingham, Norfolk, UK - a facility which is now being made available for external customers.

Caterham Composites, which specialises in delivering turn-key lightweight structural composite solutions, will be supporting Mike and Brian with its engineering and consultancy know-how throughout the races. Being actively involved in numerous lightweight structural composite projects with an IMOCA Open 60 Race team, the company is now eager to face new challenges.

MGI will act as lead consultancy on Caterham Challenge. Founded by Mike Gascoyne in 2001, MGI is a professional and dynamic engineering consultancy offering high level services to the maritime, aviation, automotive and motorsport industries and is uniquely placed to lead this exciting new venture in offshore racing.
