CRC-ACS recognised at CRCA annual conference

Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Composite Structures (CRC-ACS) recognised at Cooperative Research Centres Association (CRCA) annual conference: "Innovating with Asia 2014".

CRC-ACS was successful in securing two awards. In the presence of many distinguished guests including the current Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Industry - The Hon. Bob Baldwin, MP, and former Prime Minister of Australia - The Hon. Bob Hawke, AC, CRC-ACS was recognised in two categories:

Award for Excellence in Innovation
Arising from the application and use of research - one of three awards
The CRC-ACS team for the Project “Deep Water Composites” was recognised for its work on the "Novel Composite Clamp for Pipeline Repair".

Contributors involved in this winning project were Advanced Composite Structures Australia, Pacific Engineering Systems International, Petronas Research (Malaysia), Supacat, Newcastle University (UK), University of Southern Queensland, and Merit Technologies (Malaysia).

In attendance to receive the award were Chuah Beng Swee, KH Leong, Luke Djukic, Rowan Paton and Murray Scott. This is the second award for this technology in 2014, with the clamp also receiving a prestigious JEC Composites Innovation Award in a ceremony on 11 March in Paris.

Early career researcher showcase – Best five minute presentation
Best five-minute presentation on their research - one winner from five finalists
Current University of Queensland PhD student - Mr Luigi Vandi, was judged the best presenter from 48 candidates and five finalists for the early career researcher showcase, each of whom submitted 30-second videos explaining the key aspects of their research.

Luigi's outstanding presentation on "Understanding Interphase Formation in Thermoset Composite Welding", is key to the work being undertaken in CRC-ACS Materials & Manufacturing projects, offering next-generation assembly of composites for aircraft structures.
