The development of bamboo fiber composites in China

Recently, Sichuan Hongya Zhuyuan Science & Technology Corp. researchers have given new life to the bamboo.

The company have created bamboo fiber composite material. The compressive strength of this material is only half of the steel, while the elastic is basically the same with steel, but the weight is only 1/6 of the steel. It is a new high-end environmental protection material with wide application potential and will gradually replace the wood and glass fiber materials become the mainstream products in the future.

Bamboo fiber composite material uses the renewable Cizhu bamboo as raw material with the bamboo bundle as the basic unit along the texture direction by the heat (cold) press into new environmental protection plate. The wind strength of the product is high with high hardness, good toughness. The physical and mechanical properties are in line with the wind power requirements. Compared with the glass fiber wind blade, the bamboo wind blade is 10% lighter with high cost-performance rate. The cost is 15% lower than the glass fiber wind blade.

China has rich bamboo resources that are renewable and easy for degradation and recycling. Bamboo wind blade has the characteristics including high strength, good corrosion resistance, high abrasion resistance, high density, high hardness, and good weathering resistance. Hongya Zhuyuan bamboo fiber composite materials can be used in the development and production of wind power blades, building timber, furniture, and outdoor floor timber.

The raw materials make full use of small diameter bamboo; the bamboo raw material usage ratio can reach more than 90%. It is a kind of new type bamboo based artificial panel products that can replace wood-based panel products. During the preparation process, the direction arrangement of bamboo fiber has not been disturbed sot that the bamboo original high strength characteristic can be maintained. In addition, the bamboo fiber composite materials have a very wide application range. It can control the density according to the needs of products, so as to change the physical and mechanical properties.

The bamboo fiber reinforced composites can also be used as indoor and outdoor floor, trestle bridge floor, bathroom floor, container soleplate, train and car floor, indoor and outdoor furniture; garden furniture, outdoor, wood structure, doors and windows and facade materials. Through the heat treatment process the bamboo composites colors can be changed to replace mahogany and other valuable timbers to make high-grade flooring board.

As early as in the year 2010, 100 sets of 800KW bamboo wind blade have been in operation for 4 years now. The 1.5 MW wind blade has passed the static test the 2MW, 2.5MW, 3MW bamboo wind blades are in the design stage and the mature industrial manufacturing technology and stable supply chain have been improved.

It is expected that by 2015, the wind power installed capacity can be close to 100 million kilowatts, the current wind power blade demand reached up to 30000 a year with a of growth rate 20%.

Through research and development of the application in the wind power blade manufacturing, the bamboo based composite material quality, requirements have been enhanced. Because the better price performance ratio and its environmental protection advantages, bamboo fiber composite material will gradually replace the wood and glass fiber materials and become the future mainstream products.

Many architects hope to achieve a breakthrough in the choice of materials. With the experience rich accumulation, the architect is more like a manifestation of thoughts and ideas through the material conveying. For the Beijing Youth Camp International project, the designer Wang Gang also has racked his brain in the aspects of material selection. Finally, through various investigation and discussion, he decided to choose bamboo fiber composite as the main material.

All these show that it is a very energy efficient building. Therefore, the selection of bamboo fiber composites is relative to the energy saving and environmental protection. They are bound together in a common cause. The whole building from design to construction completion costed only one and a half month time.
