The company is selected by America's Cup yacht racing team to supply, install and commission dust extraction and air compression equipment.

The sizeable, busy facility at times can house up to 4 impressive 45ft+ catamarans and a substantial amount of busy engineers and refinishing experts fine tuning and repairing their deadly racing weaponry. All this activity can heavily pollute the air with fine dust particles as common sanding, grinding and cutting tasks are carried out. Compliance with carbon fibre dusts was crucial to successfully abridge health hazards caused from such particles, DTC ensured all health and safety legislation was carefully adhered to.

A thorough onsite consultation kicked off the project, leading to the drafting of plans and 3D CAD drawings. The end design incorporated innovative parallel pipework fittings for both the extraction piping and air hoses. This resulted in a highly professional finish successfully minimising required space and creating an aesthetically pleasing design.

DTC fit out this world class racing boat building facility with a bespoke extraction system to take care of the copious levels of carbon dust. The 20 horsepower centralised dust extraction turbine with inverter system was fitted with a 3500mm/H20 vacuum. 12 access points were installed throughout the facility allowing for on tool dust extraction procedures. Extracting the dust at source proved the most effective means of particle removal for this operation, to ventilate and clean the air effectively throughout the entire hefty workshop would be inefficient.

A variable speed rotary screw compressor was also installed to empower the dedicated team with immediate access to compressed air for use with an array of air tools such as grinders, polishers, air saws etc. Offering a flow of 22.8 to 129.4 cfm, the high end compressor included integration of refrigeration dryer and electronic drain. 19 double air outlet terminals were installed throughout the premises with piping discreetly fitted throughout the site.

The DTC projects team managed the entire fit out from the planning stages right through to completion. The turnkey solution proved successful resulting in project completion on time and on budget.

“It’s a real pleasure to support such an exciting yacht racing team, the scale of the operation is just staggering and we couldn’t be happier with the way this installation project turned out.” Said Rick Wakeford, Sales Director of Direct Tool Company. “Through working with a number of the teams this year we have put together a well-defined specialist range of refinishing consumables and our reliable service has proved invaluable to these fast paced, busy teams” he added.
