Edmonton transit line purchases Axion's 100% recycled composite rail ties

Axion International Holdings, a producer of recycled plastic and plastic composite technologies used to produce ECOTRAX rail ties and STRUXURE building products, announces that they received a purchase order from a new customer, Edmonton Light Rail Transit for ECOTRAX specialty rail ties.

ECOTRAX composite rail ties are made from Axion's patented 100%-recycled plastic formulation and will be used for road crossing applications where the transit line's rail tracks intersect with roads.

With this order, Edmonton Light Rail Transit becomes Axion's third customer in Canada and one of numerous transit lines around the world to install ECOTRAX.

ECOTRAX offer unique benefits and advantages, as compared to traditional wood ties, in cold northern climates. During the long winter season salt is regularly used for road safety due to heavy snowfall and ice formation.
While salt entrapment under road crossings can damage and reduce the life of traditional wood ties, ECOTRAX are impervious to salt. Freeze-thaw cycles are also common, where water gets into wood, freezes, and then thaws again, leading to a weakening and rapid deterioration of traditional wood ties. ECOTRAX are not porous, do not absorb moisture, and therefore are impervious to water and rot. Offering longevity and therefore a higher ROI for customers, ECOTRAX also provide the added environmental benefits of recycling plastic waste and reducing the harvesting of trees.

ECOTRAX ties meet AREMA standards (American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-way Association). They resist plate wear, hold spikes, and maintain gauge – even after more than ten years at the TTCI HTL test track (Transportation Technology Center Inc.'s high tonnage loop test), accumulating over 1,800 MGT of 39-ton axle loads.
ECOTRAX outperform traditional railroad ties. They are virtually impervious to the elements; will not rust, splinter, crumble, rot, absorb moisture or leach toxic chemicals into the environment; and are completely impervious to infestation by insects. ECOTRAX ties offer a lower lifetime cost than traditional materials and installing ECOTRAX requires no special tools or training. information:
