JEC Group have brought together the international community of composites leaders and executives in our Composites Circle as an unique networking opportunity to meet with both peers and future partners.
British engineering and manufacturing company Formaplex had its most successful Composites Engineering Show in three years of exhibiting, with 142 meetings and discussions. Over one third of these were new to the company and hadn’t been aware of the wide range of products and services Formaplex offers.
The company’s stand featured a 1965 Corvette Stingray race car(see photo), one of the first production composite bodied cars. Undoubtedly this helped to attract the large numbers of people engaging with the five staff present, who were led by Composites Director Jon Payne.
With Formaplex’s many automotive and motorsport customers in F1, Lemans GT and touring cars to name but a few, they were in a position to borrow a modern car. However they didn’t want to be tied to one team, and visually the radical lines of the corvette were a real show stopper. The fact that legendary drivers including Emerson Fittapaldi and Jochen Mass have raced the car certainly didn’t hurt either!
Formaplex has built an unrivalled reputation in the motorsport and automotive industries and the Show helped the company increase its profile in the important aerospace market. In addition around 30 people heard Formaplex MD Michael Last give a forum presentation on how the lessons learnt in the motor sport or automotive arenas are directly transferable to the defence and other industries.
Jon Payne said: “The Composite Engineering Show this year has been the best ever for us. We deal with a huge range of customers from multi nationals to one man bands, and it is important that future customers of any size understand that our experience and technical ability is available to all on an equal footing.
“The show enabled us to meet lots of our existing customers, and also gave us many exciting leads with new clients. There is nowhere in the UK or Europe where we can meet so many important people in one place.
“The Corvette certainly helped bring people to the stand and from there we could explain the important role that the car played in the history of composites in automotive, as well as our own role as one of the leading pattern and tooling suppliers in all areas of the composites automotive and aerospace industry.”
Formaplex is a true example of technology transfer in action applying the lessons it learns in one industry to the benefit of others. Its diversity linked by its core skill, the ability to design and machine accurate tooling and pattern work to very tight time scales and budgets, has seen rapid growth in this trickiest of economic times.
