Wood-plastic composites, or WPCs, are typical examples of polymers reinforced with natural materials. They consist of the renewable raw material wood (as wood dust or wood fiber), a mostly synthetic polymer and additives. Predominantly thermoplastics such as polyolefins (PE, PP) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are used as a polymer matrix.

Thermal analysis methods – in particular thermogravimetry (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), dilatometry (DIL), evolved gas analysis and light/laser flash analysis (LFA, for determination of the thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity) – are powerful tools for determining the properties of WPC compounds.

By means of selected application examples, this webinar illustrates the conclusions which can be drawn from measurement curves based on the thermoanalytical methods introduced.
