JEC World 2016 - To meet the need for new solutions combining high performance and high-throughput processes, CTIPC and its partners developed new hybrid solutions (thermoplastic composite overmoulding) for the production of net-shape semi-structural parts.

Going one step further, the "smart composites" programme was launched last year to enhance the functionality of composite parts by integrating new features to FRPs.

This year, CTIPC and its spin-off S2P will present the first outcome of the programme: a hybrid part equipped with a 3D strain gauge combining expertise in composites processing and "plastronics" (electronic printed on plastics). The device uses Laser Direct Structuring (LDS) to provide accurate and non-intrusive measurements.

This development meets the need for continuous monitoring of structural composite parts to guarantee user safety. It opens the way to improved competitiveness of composite solutions against other materials by increasing functional integration with the underlying mass-production approach of "plastronics".

Over the next few years, CTIPC aims at developing a wide array of integrated smart solutions covering various technological approaches and functions (such as sensing, identification and anti-icing) within the framework of its upcoming Hyprod² platform.
