How does the use of fast-curing adhesives change the design of structural joints?

Sana Elyas, an engineering manager from Carbures, presents her work and the numerous possible applications it provides during the JEC conference Simulation session in Boston this October. 

Q: In your opinion, what is the real challenge in terms of design of structural joints?
A: Designing a structural joint requires a clear understanding of the materials, loads, interface and environmental conditions. The right balance is the most critical and challenging criteria, as it must pay off in overall performance, weight and cost saving. 

Q: What is the expertise of Carbures in this field? Can you tell more about your technology?
A: Working in aerospace, automotive and infrastructure sectors, we have experience in design, processes, materials, sizes, etc. The idea in the shop while manufacturing is to optimize the process time in assembly. We have worked with fast-cure adhesives in automotive and infrastructure sectors, and achieved very good results. We noticed a considerable difference in bond times on our aerospace projects, and wanted to reverse engineer & utilize the fast curing adhesive technology, on our aerospace projects.

Q: What motivates you to give a speech in Boston in October?
A: JEC provides a unique international platform for the Industry, Academicians and Engineers; to stay up to date with new technologies and network. This seemed to be the perfect opportunity to present our research work.

It will take place on October 28th in Boston during the JEC Composite conferences.
