Recently, Guangzhou Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Co., Ltd. (GAMECO) has held an inauguration ceremony for its hangar second phase project. It is a joint investment between Hutchison Whampoa Limited (HWL) and China Southern Airlines (China Southern).

The project costs 580 million Yuan (US$ 98 million), can accommodate up to 8 narrow body aircrafts that marks a Gameco development milepost. HWL (China) managing director Du Zhiqiang said that the company is optimistic about the prospects for the development of aviation industry in the mainland.

In the year 2014, Gameco will start the construction of projects of aircraft landing gear repair base, accessories business center, Center for composite materials, and third hangars in sequence with a total investment of more than 3 billion Yuan (US$ 500 million).

At present Gameco has expanded to Zhengzhou, Shanghai, Urumqi, and Chongqing. And the company also has the overseas business experience, which enable Gameco to develop more investment plans. The Gameco first phase hangar project alone has planned the projects including the new accessories business center, Center for composite materials, and the third phase hangar project.

Among them, accessories business center will build the mainland's most advanced aircraft accessories repair base. In the future, the aircraft industry will become more electronic intensive, intelligent, and integrated. The accessories proportion in the repair business will experience a sustained and rapid growth. Because the accessories repair is different from the labor intensive airframe repair, the electronic components in depth repair needs to introduce advanced equipments. The company plans to invest more than 1 billion Yuan (US$ 167 million) in this regard.

It is an aircraft composite materials era today. Many advanced aircraft parts, especially the structure components have widely used composite material in the manufacturing, Gameco plans to work with foreign manufacturers to invest 300 million Yuan (US$ 500 million) in the construction of composite center project. It is expected to start next year.

The aircraft landing gear repair base project also with a total investment of 300 million Yuan (US$ 500 million) will be located in Qingyuan county only 80 kilometers from the Baiyun Airport that is expected to start next year as well and will be completed and put into production in 2015.
