Hybrid moulding for next-generation aerospace components

JEC Europe 2015 - The innovative hybrid moulding technology developed by Victrex enables engineers to overmould a PAEK-based composite with fibre-reinforced PEEK injection moulding materials.

The company will display a hybrid-moulded aerospace bracket that was designed and engineered with the demanding performance requirements of loaded applications in mind. The Victrex® PAEK-based bracket is able to deliver up to 60% weight savings compared to stainless steel and titanium, while offering equivalent or better mechanical properties such as strength, stiffness, and fatigue.

The design flexibility of the process allows for the bracket to be produced in minutes compared to the hours it would take for a metal or thermoset equivalent. This translates into less processing time, lower energy requirements, and reduced waste. These benefits, paired with eliminating several processing steps, help to reduce overall part costs. Victrex can support the development of hybrid moulding applications from concept to commercialization.

Using the latest modelling software, the company can work together with customers to make sure the part meets specific requirements and quickly validate the performance modelled in the software through prototyping and testing in its own laboratories. With these services being proven and available, customers now have a faster, more innovative approach to addressing future bracket challenges.
