For the first time, the ITHEC organizers together with the JEC Composites Magazine awarded the Best Paper Award this year.

ITHEC is the first and unique expert conference focusing on structural lightweight constructions. The two day event had covered the latest developments in high performance thermoplastic composite applications in aerospace, automotive and energy applications, as well as transport & engineering. Around 400 specialists from all over the world met to discuss the newest findings on lightweight construction materials, which experts believe have a high potential. 50 companies and research institutions displayed their current developments in the accompanying professional exhibition.

In close cooperation with the editor of the JEC Composites Magazine, PhD student Tjitse Slange (TPRC), has been nominated to receive the ITHEC / JEC Best Paper Award for his paper about “Rapid Manufacturing of a Tailored Spar by AFP and Stamp Forming”.

Rapid Manufacturing of a Tailored Spar by AFP and Stamp Forming
Stamp forming is a manufacturing technology used to shape flat thermoplastic composite blanks into three- dimensional components. Further cost and weight optimization can be achieved by combining stamp forming with blank manufacturing by rapid AFP. The use of AFP allows for optimized lay-ups, which improve the performance/weight ratio of the stamp formed part, and near net shape blank contours, which reduce production scrap. Subsequent stamp forming provides the final shape and consolidation quality of the part.
