Laser treatment of fibre-reinforced composites

JEC Europe 2012 - The Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) participates in research and development projects for laser development and laser applications. It also provides advice on technical and scientific challenges with the goal of combining theory and practice. One focus of the LZH is the laser treatment of fibre-reinforced materials, particularly carbon-fibre-reinforced plastics (CFRP).

To this end, cost-efficient, automatable high-quality processes are developed. This subject is investigated by its Composites group with a focus on repairing and cutting. Laser cutting stands out because it allows fast separation without high tool wear. The LZH also explores laser-based ablation of CFRP with the long-term goal of establishing it as a repair strategy. The advantages of this procedure are the free choice of shapes and the experimentally achieved high strength of repaired structures. Additionally, processes for laser transmission welding of thermoplastics onto CFRP are developed to provide the possibility of joining parts without bonding or riveting. One important aim is to improve weld seam quality and strength. The Composites group also develops individual applications for industry partners and supports them during the integration of the laser process into their production line.
