LCA assisted product development

Sponsored news - Reichhold holds the necessary know-how and tools to perform Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Inventory Studies (LCI) in accordance with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards since 2012.

In the beginning, these capabilities were only used to provide our customers with reliable LCI data closely reflecting the resin’s eco-footprint. The GRP producers could then utilize this data to evaluate the environmental impact of their final products in a much more accurate way than when using generic LCI data.

More recently, recognizing the increasingly more important role of LCA as criteria to select products among competing materials, Reichhold has moved one step further.

LCA is no longer simply used to calculate the environmental impact of the existing products, but has been included in any resin development project Reichhold is working on.

Once the specification for the new resin is known, the development team at Reichhold’s Technology Center located in Sandefjord, Norway, is able to propose several formulations meeting all requirements for the prospective product. Knowing exactly the environmental impacts of most of raw material used in these formulations, Reichhold’s scientists are able to calculate and predict which formulation would provide the most sustainable and ecologically friendly solution.

As a result, the eco-footprint of the resin can be analyzed and well understood even before that particular resin is made. This product development process ensures that the new resins meet not only the liquid or mechanical properties but also the future ecological requirements.

In addition to LCA-aware raw material selection, Reichhold continues to optimize its manufacturing process making sure that no raw material, no energy input and no auxiliary media is wasted or used unnecessarily.
“The above confirms Reichhold’s responsible, long term commitment to Composites market growth by including Sustainability in our Product Development on the basis of a structured, data based, globally recognized methodology,” says Alberto Piccinotti, VP Sales and Technology Europe.

Reichhold will give a presentation on LCA assisted product development at the JEC Technical Sales Presentations sessions in Paris, March 12th at 11.00 am.
