A new seminar at the architecture school entitled “Computational Composite Form: computational design & carbon fiber robotic fabrication” was led by YSoA Professor Ezio Blasetti. The YSoA students built computational tools and material prototypes using the robotic tools of the YSoA fabrication studio. The student projects tested manufacturing strategies and material properties to explore the transformative potentials of advanced carbon fiber manufacturing.

LeMond Composites is committed to building the next generation of composite manufacturing. Founded by carbon fiber industry pioneer and famed Tour de France champion Greg LeMond, LeMond offers solutions for high volume, low-cost carbon fiber. Their revolutionary production process promises an explosion in the use of this once-exotic material. A breakthrough new manufacturing process allows LeMond to drop prices and greatly expand global production capacity, finally making carbon fiber widely accessible to the next generation of designers and builders.

The partnership will continue as students continue to develop their work into 2019. The students of this years’ seminar may be the first generation of architects to take advantage of the extraordinary potential of carbon fiber robotic fabrication. The methods and tools they develop today may shape the structure of the built world for years to come.
