Local Plastic Microfactory, a project to make core material from plastic waste

Talon, an australian manufacturer of carbon and kevlar fibre products, works on a project for the reprocessing of plastic waste which is an enormous problem in the Asia-Pacific region.

The developing world is creating a lot of discarded plastic, and before industries can begin the long term plan of reducing it at source, researcher from Talon work to find a way to make something useful out of the rubbish that is clogging the beaches and waterways.

Talon made a sandwich panel made from outer skins of Saint Gobain Vetrotex comingled thermoplastic fabric and a 25mm thick plastic core made entirely from unsorted and minimally processed plastic rubbish.

The molding process is simple and the machine they have designed to make these parts is a statement in simple robust technology, they like to think that it follows the T34 Tank design ethos.

The panel is part of a Talon program called Local Plastic Microfactory ( LPM ). Where the company start with a product design and work back to how and what we should make it from, with the overarching philosophy that the more waste the product uses, the better, which is quite the opposite of the usual way to design composite and plastic parts where they are constantly striving to reduce materials.

This is a product that the company will shortly be making for the local beaches in Sydney, its washes the sand off people feet before they get in their car, and is made entirely from plastic waste retrieved from nearby beaches and harbours.

The company plan is to make plastic recycling a village based activity where the rubbish collected is reprocessed into products such as school playgrounds, retaining walls and perhaps with the addition of Vetrotex fibre some structural components that directly and immediately benefit the local community, these obvious and tangible benefits we believe, will encourage communities to get involved and stop plastic waste from contaminating the wider environment.

Talon believe that the problem of plastic waste can be fixed, however the vast majority of the plastic is simply too contaminated, mixed and degraded to make a quality product that could be sold at a premium price in first world market. They think the only way to make the program successful is by giving away the finished product to the local people.
