Cutting Carbon with diamond: a project starts in the second funding phase at the Cluster MAI Carbon.
The MAI ProCut project stands for increasing productivity in the final processing of carbon fiber reinforced materials. The new research project of MAI Carbon was initiated by Hufschmied Zerspanungssysteme GmbH, GFD Gesellschaft für Diamant mbH, Schunk Kohlenstoff GmbH, BMW Bayerische Motorenwerke AG, Airbus Helicopters Deutschland GmbH and the DLR. The project is scheduled to run until November 2016 with 2.1 million Euros in funding which needs to be matched by these companies. In the MAI ProCut project, special cutting tools will be developed for processing different fiber composite materials. The goal is to establish diamond-coated and specific prepared tools, which have special cutting geometries. In addition to the development of cutting tools, the development of an appropriate coating and sharpness process for the tools is required. Diamond will be used as a coating material, the sharpening will be done by means of plasma processes. The developed tools have a lifespan of up to 8 times longer when compared to current tools. By building material-specific standardization solutions, cost reductions of up to 50% for the completion of fiber composites are expected.More information: www.mai-carbon.de
