MVP and Arkema team up to present thermoplastic injection

In 2012, MVP was introduced to a new material for closed molding developed by chemical producer Arkema. Elium is a thermoplastic resin that can be used in a thermoset injection system, like a thermoset injection resin would be, but with benefits that far exceed standard polyester resins.

Unlike parts made with thermoset resins, those made with thermoplastics are recyclable, the thermoplastic resin works as well with the injection process as thermoset resin, styrene emissions are dramatically reduced, and it is much more cost effective in the long run.

The challenge with using thermoplastic resins has been the high cost of the systems available to dispense it. Arekma approached MVP about designing a thermoset injection machine that would process this new material – all for a comparable cost to standard thermoset injection systems. MVP designers could see the potential of thermoplastic resins, in a system that would be more affordable than the current thermoplastic systems, it was going to take something new and innovative.

The Patriot Pro Innovator was used as the model for this new system. With the precision of Patriot at its heart, redesigning the Pro Innovator was the only logical step in bringing this technology to the broader composites market, in a form they could afford. It didn’t take long before the Patriot Pro Innovator Thermoplastic Injection System was ready to go.

Magnum Venus Products will use those products in live demonstrations at the Composites Europe Expo in Düsseldorf, Germany October 14 – 16, 2014.
