Nanotechnology for anti-icing coatings for wind turbines in extreme environments

The project AeroExtreme, led by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energies, will allow the development of feasible solutions for a new generation of wind turbines resistant to extreme temperatures. Aimplas takes part in the project developing nanomaterial-based anti-icing coatings to be incorporated as paints to protect blades.

Nanotechnology for anti-icing coatings for wind turbines in extreme environments

The exposure of wind turbines to extreme climates, such as those representing the formation of ice on blades was, up until now, a problem, since these factors used to limit their performance and power generation. In order to guarantee the safe and efficient operation of wind turbines under these kind of climate conditions, Aimplas, the Plastics Technology Centre, takes part in the project AeroExtreme to allow developing nanotechnology-based anti-icing coatings.  

The project, co-funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness within the call Retos-Colaboración 2016 with file number RTC-2016-4712-3, is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and is led by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energies. The contribution of Aimplas to this project draws from the previous developments on anti-icing coatings carried out by the centre thanks to the incorporation of nanomaterials. These new materials provide resistance to both extreme temperatures and erosion and they will make possible a reduction of operation and maintenance and they will open up new markets to wind turbine manufacturers. 

The project has an eligible budget of EUR 1,452,160.61 and there are other participant companies: LAURENTIA, ITC-UJI, and TEKNIKER. These companies will perform their research tasks on manufacturing and scaling of nanoparticles, development of ceramic particles and synthesis, selection and validation of nanoparticles, respectively.
