The National Center for Advanced Materials Performance (NCAMP) at Wichita State University's National Institute for Aviation Research has released the composite material property data and statistical analysis reports, along with the material and process specifications for Hexcel Hexply 8552 prepregs. These documents are available for download on the NCAMP website.
The lamina and laminate material property data have been generated with FAA oversight and in accordance with the requirements of NCAMP Standard Operating Procedure NSP 100. The test panels, test specimens and test setups have been conformed by the FAA, and the testing has been witnessed by the FAA. The statistical analysis reports have been generated in accordance with the procedures in Composte Material Handbook 17 (CMH-17) Revision G. These aerospace-grade materials are produced by Hexcel Corporation in accordance with NCAMP material specifications and NCAMP-approved Process Control Documents with change control per FAA guidelines in DOT/FAA/AR-06/10 and DOT/FAA/AR-07/3. The NCAMP documents are intended for general distribution to the public, either freely or at a price that does not exceed the cost of reproduction and distribution (e.g. printing, postage).
Users should understand that the data generated in this program may not fulfill all the needs of any specific company's programs. Specific properties, environments, laminate architecture, and loading situations may require additional testing. In addition, the use of NCAMP material and process specifications do not guarantee material or structural performance. Material users should be actively involved in evaluating material performance and quality, including, but not limited to, performing regular purchaser quality control tests, performing periodic equivalency/additional testing, participating in material change management activities, conducting statistical process control and conducting regular supplier audits.
This program was sponsored by NASA Langley Research Center. The FAA has provided the necessary oversight to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements. Hexcel Corporation has donated all the materials for this program. Cessna Aircraft Company fabricated over 500 test panels for the baseline qualification and allowables program. The companies that have participated in the equivalency programs are Hawker Beechcraft, Spirit AeroSystems, ATK Space Systems, Boeing Helicopters, Goodrich Aerostructures, Israel Aircraft Industries, Gulfstream Aerospace, Northrop Grumman, Bell Helicopter and Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. Additional part fabricators that wish to utilize the material property data, allowables and specifications may be able to do so by demonstrating the capability to reproduce the original material properties; a process known as equivalency. More information about this equivalency process including the test statistics and its limitations can be found in Section 6 of DOT/FAA/AR-03/19 and Section 8.4.1 of CMH-17-1G/MIL-HDBK-17-1F.
These Hexcel 8552 documents are the first set of qualifications completed by NCAMP. NCAMP will be submitting the data and documents to CMH-17 (CMH-17) and Society of Automotive Engineers for further publications. The draft documents for other qualification programs, such as those for ACG MTM45-1 and Cytec 5250-5 are being reviewed by NCAMP members on the NCAMP portal. There is no cost to become an NCAMP member and get access to the NCAMP portal. FAA Acceptance of NCAMP Process
The FAA has issued a policy memorandum which details the acceptability of NCAMP material and process specifications and allowables. The FAA memo may be downloaded on the FAA website. The policy memo outlines the process required by applicants to use NCAMP data.
The National Center for Advanced Materials Performance is located at the National Institute for Aviation Research at Wichita State University. NCAMP’s goal is to take the composites industry to a self-regulating level similar to that achieved by the metals industry. This ambitious goal requires a strong level of support and participation from industry and government.
