New ATL system to revolutionize composite production

JEC Europe 2015 - Mikrosam will present and offer at this year’s JEC Europe the new patent-pending automated tape laying (ATL) system it has developed for one of the largest civil airplane part manufacturers.

Considering the need for a solution that would increase production throughput while providing the ability to manufacture complex-geometry laminates, Mikrosam will present and offer at this year’s JEC Europe the new patent-pending automated tape laying (ATL) system it has developed for one of the largest civil airplane part manufacturers.

This avant-garde automated contour tape laying (ACTL) equipment guarantees high productivity rates, flexibility and precision. It consists of a layup head and a portal-style assembly that includes 3 rotational axes and 3 linear axes, suitable for automated laying of carbon fibre tapes for the production of composite parts.

The new ATL head consists of independently-controlled, multi-segmented shoe members used to apply the tape, and an additional compaction method used to complete tape application. Both are linked through a dynamic servo-control system, which improves tape laying precision and reduces errors. This provides for fine adjustment of the compaction force against the work surface and different laying paths, while avoiding bubbles, gaps, overlaps, and wrinkles.

The new head's innovative feature is that it achieves a very large free angle envelope (±40°), which represents a 60% wider laying range compared to previous solutions, therefore giving the opportunity to lay on concave surfaces. As such, this ATL solution increases laying performance, productivity and precision and avoids tape deviations and vibrations during the laying process.
