JEC Europe 2014 - This new high heat resistance and flame-retardant fibre has several unique properties, such as fine denier, low smoke density and good dyeability.

PEI (polyetherimide) is an amorphous thermoplastic resin offering special features – such as high heat resistance, flame retardancy and low smoke density – manufactured by SABIC (Saudi Basic Industries Corporation) under the ULTEM trademark. Kuraray has succeeded in manufacturing PEI fibre with their original spinning technology. This new high heat resistance and flame-retardant fibre has several unique properties, such as fine denier, low smoke density and good dyeability.

PEI fibre can be used in many applications, such as composite applications. Kuraray has developed new thermoplastic composites with their fibre technology. A sheet composed of reinforcement fibre (e.g. carbon fibre) and PEI fibre can be formed simply by heat pressing as PEI fibre will melt.

Main benefits:

•             Excellent fire retardant (FR) properties
•             High mechanical properties
•             3D shapes, thinner parts
•             Low weight and recyclability
•             Thermoplasticity

Most importantly, PEI fibre provides a safe and secure environment.
