Offshore wind power projects stimulates composite materials demand in China

During "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, China will strengthen the construction of offshore wind power. In Jiangsu, Shandong, Hebei, Shanghai, Guangdong, Zhejiang and other coastal provinces, China will build a batch of offshore wind power demonstration projects. This will drive offshore wind power technology and equipment support capability.

China has a coastline of about 18000 kilometers, with a developable offshore area of about 3000000 square kilometers, more than 6000 islands, and a broad offshore beach area. China's eastern coastal areas beach and offshore area have good conditions for the development of wind power.


During the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period (2012 to 2017), China will focus on offshore wind power development and construction in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Hebei, Shandong, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Liaoning and other coastal provinces (cities). Fujian, Guangxi, Hainan and other coastal area offshore wind power planning and project construction also will advance further.


The 5MW, 6MW offshore wind turbine blade manufacturing industry is the most challenging job in supporting the offshore wind power development.  CSIC (Chongqing) Haizhuang Wind Power Equipment Co., Ltd is the main research body for China offshore wind power engineering technology. They also completed the R&D of 5MW offshore wind sample turbine. In the mean time, Sino Wind Energy Co., Ltd is developing 6MW offshore wind turbine blade.


Offshore wind power development will drive new round of China supporting wind blade glass steel composite product technology upgrading, quality improvement and output. Especially, the offshore wind power wind turbine blade development will comprehensively enhance the composite materials and process technology.


The blade reinforcing fibers will broadly use high performance glass fiber. And the loading structure will apply carbon fiber. Resins applied in the wind power include epoxy, vinyl ester, high performance unsaturated polyester resin, and polyurethane resin. The forming processes will move from wet vacuum gradually to the dry vacuum forming process. And the blade molding process will develop the integral forming technology.


In addition to wind power equipment, the offshore wind farm new demand for the anti-corrosion coatings, special mounting ship and submarine cable also will emerge from market. The construction, installation, operation and maintenance costs will account for more than half of the total cost.
