JEC Group have brought together the international community of composites leaders and executives in our Composites Circle as an unique networking opportunity to meet with both peers and future partners.
In a recent festive ceremony held in Moscow, Professor Thomas Gries, director of the Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University, was awarded an honorary professorship by Lomonosov Moscow State University.
“Prof Gries is honoured in lieu of his extraordinary scientific achievement in the development of fiber based composites“, announced Prof Sadownitschij, Rector of MSU, to the prominent guests from industry, research and Politics. The distinguished professorship is awarded once a year to a deserving foreign scientist as well as a Russian citizen. This year, the first woman in space, Russian Valentina Tereshkova received the honour, too. Historically, such honorary professorship from the MSU has been bestowed upon several Nobel laureates such as Niels Bohr. Tailored Reinforcement Textiles – systematic further developmentProminent result of Prof Gries’ research is the systematic development and implementation of the concept of "Tailored Reinforcement Textiles" - from the basic idea up to an industrial production approach. Thus, the pre-conditions for resource-efficient production of composite components and their wide application for lightweight applications have been fulfilled, for example in the automotive industryEnabling German-Russian scientific connectionsThe honorary professorship for Prof Gries is furthermore the recognition of his success in the deepening of Russian-German scientific relations. Both the exchange of graduate students and scientists as well as guest lectures and research partnerships were initiated by him. A highlight will be a workshop at MSU concerning the future of high-performance materials in the energy sector. In spring 2013, renowned scientists and industry representatives from both countries will discuss two intensive days on a common research agenda. "This event will establish a close collaboration of renowned research institutions in Russia and Germany. New approaches for the efficient use of energy resources have a strategic importance in both countries”, informed Prof. Gries at the inauguration of this initiative.A Brief Résumé - Prof GriesProfessor Thomas Gries studied Industrial Engineering as well as Engineering Sciences and received a PhD in engineering and technology. He then worked for several years in the industry in a senior position. Since April 2001, Prof Gries has been the director of the Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University, now with 300 employees, including 90 scientists.During this time, the Institute’s sales have increased fivefold, 95% of which is funded by third party funding (public and industry). Under Professor Gries’ leadership, the ITA has developed into an internationally renowned, interdisciplinary and fully equipped Institute of Materials and Manufacturing Engineering. Background Information:Since 2006, there has been an agreement that governs the relationship between RWTH Aachen University and Moscow State University. Due to the higher education agreement, an exchange program is in place, which gives all bachelor and master students as well as diploma students the chance for an exchange between RWTH and Moscow State University.About the Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University:The Institut für Textiltechnik (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University is one of the top 10 institutes of the RWTH Aachen University. The institute develops textile machinery and components, as well as new materials and new processes for the production of textile. The ITA also offers research services and training and seminars for industrial companies as well together with its partner company 3T GmbH. Additionally; the ITA provides students from various disciplines in textile technology the ability to explore textile research, experience textile development and machinery hands on and offers a Dr. Ing. program.About Moscow State University:Moscow State University was founded in 1755 and is now the most distinguished university of Russia. The university has more than 40,000 students and over 7,000 postgraduates studying at the university, as well as more than 5,000 specialists participating in career enhancement courses. The university is also home to more than 6,000 professors and instructors and over 5,000 researchers work for the faculties and research institutes. Additionally, each year more than 4,000 international students and graduate students enroll in the university.Picture: Prof Gries, ITA, with diploma of honorary professorshipMore information:www.ita.rwth-aachen.de
