Scott Bader highlight high performance Crestapol acrylic resins

They will be promoting their Crestapol range of high performance acrylic resins, which are based on their unique urethane acrylate technology.

Crestapol acrylic resins share common attributes of being processed at room temperature and being very fast curing. They can also be fabricated when heavily ATH filled up to 200phr, to achieve a range of fire, smoke and toxic fumes (FST) standards specified for buildings, rail, metro and other mass transportation applications; this includes ASTM 162, 662 and E84 as well as meeting HL2 for ISO 5658-2, 5659-2 and 5660-1&2.  The inherent toughness of a fully cured urethane acrylate based resin matrix provides excellent mechanical properties, even with the very high mineral filler loadings needed to achieve the highest FST performance.  For the US market, the focus by Scott Bader is on three key Crestapol grades which are aimed at different applications and customer needs: Crestapol 1212, Crestapol 1250LV and Crestapol 1080.

Crestapol 1212 is a tough, very low viscosity resin designed for closed mould processing to a high level of surface finish and also for pultrusion, with the key productivity advantage of faster haul-off speeds compared with typical pultrusion grade thermoset resins due to its very rapid cure. It has proved ideal for demanding building and passenger transportation FST rated applications both above and underground.

Crestapol 1250LV is a highly versatile resin with unique properties which can offer a high level of both toughness and flexibility, which is compatible with both carbon fibre and glass fibre reinforcement fabrics. It can be processed by infusion, resin transfer moulding (RTM), pultrusion and filament winding. It has higher temperature performance, with a Tg of over125°C.  It also enables fabricators to produce parts with an excellent surface finish and minimal fibre print through.  Due to its excellent performance with carbon fibres, trials have successfully demonstrated Crestapol 1250LV to be a serious alternative to established Epoxy resin systems.

Crestapol 1080 is a styrenated ‘modifying’ resin, which is compatible with most unsaturated polyester (UP) resins to produce a blended hybrid resin matrix with significantly enhanced toughness.  It has unique mechanical properties, such as an elongation to break of 120% and a Shore D hardness of 65, so making it ideal for toughening standard UP resins used in applications such as: liquid propane gas (LPG) cylinders, pipes and other pressure vessels.  Scott Bader see a number of interesting development applications with OEMs looking to produce tougher, more impact resistant finished parts; a 20% addition of Crestapol 1080 to other resin has been proved to increase the overall resin matrix toughness by up to 300%.  As with other Crestapol grades, it can be also be pigmented.
