JEC Group have brought together the international community of composites leaders and executives in our Composites Circle as an unique networking opportunity to meet with both peers and future partners.
The German Company – launches its first public idea contest about the “Germany – Land of Ideas” open innovation platform www.innovationskraftwerk.de on January 11, 2012. Contestants will be asked: “What would you make out of carbon concrete?” The objective is to seek new applications and product ideas for this very lightweight but exceptionally strong material. Carbon concrete can be fabricated into unusually fine structures and is already being used to produce designer seating.
Carbon concrete has exciting potential for use in the construction industry, both for repairing and strengthening bridges, tunnels, and old buildings as well in new buildings. In these applications, the carbon fiber/concrete composite registered under the brand name CARBOCRETE is being used as an alternative to steel-reinforced concrete because it is 75% lighter, has a longer service life and is corrosion resistant. SGL Group is currently collaborating with partners on projects in which carbon fiber concrete, in addition to CFRP strips, is already being used. The concrete is reinforced with carbon fibers in a range of forms, including multiaxial & woven fabrics, specially developed grids and chopped fibers. These projects highlight just a few of the many applications and design possibilities of carbon concrete.
Dr. Hubert Jaeger, Head of Technology & Innovation at SGL Group, describes the Open Innovation Platform as a logical step for his company. SGL Group has always placed great importance on cooperating with industry partners and research institutions to develop new applications, commonly in collaboration with end users. “We are very interested to learn what architects, designers, engineers as well as creative people from completely different sectors see in our materials.”
The competition will run from January 11 to February 22, 2012. At this time, the best ideas will be selected by a jury of experts and awarded prize money totaling €15,000. The main prize winners will have the opportunity to present their ideas in a public forum at a special SGL Group symposium that will be held in April 2012.
About "Germany - Land of Ideas" and “Innovationskraftwerk” (Innovation Powerhouse)"Germany - Land of Ideas" is a joint initiative of the Federal Government and German business and industry, overseen by the Federation of German Industries (BDI) and with Christian Wulff, the Federal President, as its patron. Begun in 2005, the Initiative conveys a positive image of Germany at home and abroad by showcasing all Germany-based projects that espouse innovation, inventiveness and inspiration.
The Initiative has developed the “Innovationskraftwerk” Open Innovation Platform in collaboration with innovation consultants inno-focus business consulting and the innovation managers of well-known companies such as Schott, Bombardier, Henkel, Otto Group, Deutsche Post, Evonik, Boehmert und Boehmert, SGL Group and Bayer Material Science.
