Ticona to nearly double Celstran LFRT production at manufacturing unit in China to meet global demand

10 May 2011

The engineering polymers business of Celanese Corporation, announced on the 9th of May 2011 it will nearly double production at its Celstran long fiber reinforced thermoplastic (LFRT) manufacturing unit in Nanjing, China.

The Celstran LFRT manufacturing unit, part of the Celanese Nanjing Integrated Chemical Complex that is the company's largest integrated chemical plant in China, came online in 2008 with an initial nameplate capacity of 5,000 metric tonnes per year. Ticona expects to nearly double the manufacturing unit’s annual capacity by the end of the fourth quarter this year.

Based on the success of the first line in Nanjing, Ticona is ramping up production to meet the continued demand of this product by our global customers, said Michael Harding, global business line director LFRT.

With Celstran LFRT plants in strategic locations in the United States, Germany and China, Ticona is the only truly global supplier with the capacity to support customers worldwide.

Celstran LFRT is an engineering thermoplastic that can be tailored to provide application-specific combinations of mechanical properties, impact and creep resistance, and low warpage. It is the material of choice for a variety of automotive applications, such as instrument panels that require large, strong, lightweight components or assemblies.

Celstran LFRT is produced by pultrusion technology, a process in which the long fibers are fully impregnated to deliver optimal reinforcement to the base plastic resin matrix, which can include polypropylene, nylon and polyurethane.

Global Brand Experience

Produced in Kaiserslautern, Germany; Winona, Minn.; and Nanjing, Celstran LFRT grades provide the same performance characteristics — and the same specifications — to all Ticona customers, whether they are in Europe, the Americas or Asia. To provide this uniform global brand experience, the three manufacturing units use the same:

  • Patented principle methodology for the LFRT manufacturing process
  • Process layout and equipment
  • Finished product specifications

Major Investment in Asia

The Celstran LFRT facility is part of a multi-year investment by Ticona in China and throughout Asia. It is providing technical and commercial resources, and facilities focused on customer application development, along with regional world-scale monomer, polymer and compounding production facilities. In addition to the Celstran LFRT facility, Ticona has established the following manufacturing units in China that produce advanced engineered polymers and compounds for customers throughout Asia:

  • GUR® ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) Production Facility — Produces this extremely high molecular weight polymer that offers a combination of excellent properties — outstanding abrasion resistance, superior impact resistance, non-sticking and self-lubricating properties, and excellent mechanical properties, even in cryogenic conditions.
  • Compounding Unit — Produces compounds for numerous advanced engineering polymers in the Ticona portfolio.

In addition to these production facilities, Ticona conducts direct sales of its trademarked engineering polymers to customers in China and throughout Asia.
