Erik Krämer, studying mechanical engineering at the University of Twente, has won the Sampe Europe Student competition, for his graduation assignment work at TPRC in the field of overmolding.
The Sampe Europe student competition was organized on 12-13 September in Liege, Belgium. In May of this year, Erik already won the Sampe Benelux student competition as well.
Sampe is an international organization devoted to the promotion of technical excellence in materials and process engineering, totaling around 15,000 engineers, technologists and materials scientists. The Sampe Europe student meeting was organized before the Sampe Europe conference, which also took place in Liege, Belgium. It aims to introduce a new generation of engineers and researchers to the Sampe organization. Finalizing master and mid-way Ph.D. students are invited to present their work to fellow students and industry.
Shape distortions in overmolded thermoplastic stamp formed compositesErik investigates shape distortions in overmolded thermoplastic composite components. Overmolding is a technology in which a thermoplastic composite blank is thermoformed and subsequently injection overmolded. Post-manufacturing shape distortions occur when the component is released from the tooling and cools down to room temperature. One of the causes for the shape distortions is the so-called spring-forward phenomenon, which is related to the anisotropic nature of composite materials. It is essential to take this effect into account when aiming for predictive high precision molding of thermoplastic composites.
An analytical model, using a thermo-elastic approach, is considered to predict the post-manufacturing spring-forward angle. The model was validated experimentally on various glass and carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites. The results for the analytical approach show good correlation with experimental results. As a result of his win, Erik will also present his project and his findings by the end of May 2017 at the SAMPE America meeting in Seattle, WA.
