JEC Group have brought together the international community of composites leaders and executives in our Composites Circle as an unique networking opportunity to meet with both peers and future partners.
A year following the announcement of an exclusive global partnership, Zoltek Corporation and Magna Exteriors and Interiors have developed a low-cost carbon fiber sheet molding compound (SMC) product for automotive applications.
The jointly developed carbon fiber SMC material uses Zoltek’s Panex 35 carbon fiber combined with Magna’s unique EpicBlendSMC formulations and production expertise. This new carbon fiber product allows Magna to offer global automotive OEMs an expanded range of lightweight parts, sub-systems and semi-structural applications for automotive, commercial truck and other markets. Additionally, the EB CFS-Z sheet molding compound is for sale directly to molders through MEI.Magna has already reported that “customers are reacting favorably and MEI has engaged a number of global companies, which recently has resulted in a new business award for a semi-structural component based on its EB CFS-Z SMC technology.”“The Magna and Zoltek technical teams have worked very closely over the past year to develop this new carbon SMC product, and we are extremely pleased with the results”, said George Husman, Zoltek CTO, “This is the lowest cost, best performing carbon SMC product ever produced.”About Zoltek Automotive:Zoltek Automotive is assisting auto manufacturers incorporate carbon fiber into vehicle components to decrease mass, increase stiffness, and improve overall efficiency using Zoltek materials.
